The $100 million gift is a tribute to Chicago’s distinctive undergraduate education: a rigorous curriculum that confronts students with fundamental texts in their original forms, challenges them to think boldly and independently, and fosters a passion for knowledge and discovery.
Odyssey Scholarships will enable more students to receive the full benefit of the University of Chicago:
- As applicants. The risks of indebtedness discourage many talented students and their families from even considering a private university like Chicago. Odyssey Scholarships will increase the number of applicants from low- and moderate-income families.
- As students. Odyssey Scholars will feel less pressure to work excessive hours to finance their education. They will have a better chance to excel in their studies and participate in Chicago’s vibrant student life.
- As young professionals. Without burdensome loans, Odyssey Scholars can pursue and excel in the careers that best suit their talents and aspirations.
The landmark anonymous gift will preserve the spirit of liberal education in the College for the century ahead. Financial concerns, driven by indebtedness, will weigh less on the minds of Odyssey Scholars. Freed from debt, they will be more able to pursue their genuine academic passions and contribute to Chicago’s vital intellectual community.
