Student Profile

Long P. recipient of the Dr. and Mrs. Pyung E. Han Odyssey Scholarship

Long P. ’17

Hometown: Worthing, SD

What did you do this past summer?
I helped out by taking an internship and research opportunity at the United States Geological Survey in Sioux Falls, SD.

Please comment on the pursuit of your major and minor, as well as any other academic interests.
I have not declared my major yet but I am considering an economics and computer science double major. I am taking the core sequence in both subjects and am fascinated by the capabilities of the tools and methods used to solve problems.

Please tell us about a significant or memorable experience you have had during your time at UChicago.
I distinctly recall one afternoon when I took four exams in a single day. It was this moment that I realized there is always success where determination exists.

What activities do you participate in outside of the classroom? Are there any that are new from last year?
Currently, I am employed by the Oriental Institute at the University, and am a member of the Housing and Facilities Committee. When I have free time, I tend to spend it playing chess, as well enjoying strategic and historical video games with my peers.

As a scholarship recipient, to what extent are you grateful for the support you received? What are your thoughts on how you might one day give back to the University of Chicago?
Your donation has allowed me to foster both personal and academic growth. Donating on behalf of a student is an investment, and therefore I must thank you all for believing and investing in me. One day soon I hope to foster growth in others at the University as well.
