Fumiko and David Hoeft  Odyssey Scholar Spotlight: 2015–16

“I enjoy performing in the University Symphony Orchestra and attending CSO performances. I also enjoy volunteering for the South Side Free Music Program by providing music lessons for children in Hyde Park.”

What did you do this past summer? What are the most striking differences between your life during the summer and your life at UChicago?

Last summer, I worked at a company called DecisionDesk in Cleveland doing development operations. I also participated on a 2-week long orchestra tour in Argentina with a youth orchestra. The most striking distinction was the ability to see my work and progress go into the company’s product.

Tell us about your academic interests.

I’m very interested in technology, but the computer science class that I found particularly interesting was discrete math, because it gave me a better understanding of the algorithms and lower-level concepts that technology incorporates. The statistics classes I’ve taken have been most interesting to me and quite valuable for my research position.

Please share a significant, memorable experience you had during your time at UChicago this year.

One memorable experience I had was attending Riccardo Muti’s talk for the school’s 125th anniversary celebration at the beginning of the year. I had seen him conduct the CSO many times in the past so it meant a lot to listen to him speak about his experiences.

What do you like to do outside of class?

I enjoy performing in the University Symphony Orchestra and attending CSO performances. I also enjoy volunteering for the South Side Free Music Program by providing music lessons for children in Hyde Park.

How have you changed (as a student, thinker, citizen, or human) since coming to the University of Chicago?

I think I have gained a more wholesome and well-rounded way of thinking since coming to the University of Chicago. After taking the required HUM and SOSC classes, I've learned so much more about how to think about and approach society.

If you could speak directly to the person who supported your scholarship, what would you say?

I greatly and sincerely appreciate all the gifts I have received. U of C provides such a great education and offers so many opportunities, and I don't think this would have been possible without your generosity. Thank you!
