“Because of you, students like me are able to chase their dreams and fulfill their highest potential.”
How did your summer experiences clarify your career or academic interests (for example, a Metcalf internship or research opportunity)?
During my first summer as a UChicago student, I was accepted to the Katen Scholars Program, a research opportunity and Metcalf internship. As a Katen Scholar in the Bishop Lab in the Department of Radiation & Cellular Oncology/Molecular Genetics & Cell Biology, I conducted an independent research project studying the localization of protein DMC1. I submitted a comprehensive proposal regarding the project and then presented the findings of my project at the conclusion of the summer. My research in cell biology has been an exciting and invaluable journey that has not stopped following my summer as a Katen Scholar. I also had the opportunity to explore and discuss issues such as health care disparities across various populations, health literacy, health policy such as the Affordable Care Act, and bench-to-bedside research through close readings, renowned faculty-led lectures, and student-led seminars. My experience as a Katen Scholar has catalyzed my growth in both science and medicine. Therefore, because of my Metcalf experience, I have come closer to achieving my lifelong goal of becoming a physician and scientist.
Please describe how you are choosing your course of study. Have there been clarifying moments in your Core classes or particularly inspiring professors who are helping identify your academic passions?
For as long as I can remember, I have been guided by my dream of becoming a physician. I recall fiddling with my father’s microscope as a little girl and examining slides stained with cells unrecognizable to me. My curiosity for biology was sparked at that young age. My love for science has only grown since then; by the time I began my first year at UChicago I was sure that I wanted to pursue a major in the biological sciences. However, I also knew by then that I had an unwavering passion for the humanities, particularly philosophy and history. Because of UChicago’s distinctive approach to the liberal arts curriculum, I have been able not only to pursue my love of science and medicine, but also satisfy my love for the humanities. The Core at UChicago has shown me that there are no limits when it comes to pursuing my passions.
What activities are you involved with outside the classroom?
Outside the classroom, I am a research assistant in the Bishop Lab where I am currently investigating a particular protein that plays a chief role in meiotic recombination. I am also the community health project coordinator of the UChicago chapter of United Against Inequalities in Disease, an organization dedicated to addressing health disparities found in particular neighborhoods on the South Side of Chicago. I am intrigued by ethics and, particularly, bioethics. As a result, outside the classroom, I am a scholar in the Emerging Scholars Cohort in Bioethics at the Hyde Park Institute and a University of Chicago Clinical Excellence scholar. I am also a student visit coordinator at the University of Chicago Office of Admissions. My combined passions for medicine and human interaction are expressed through my tutoring at Comer Children’s Hospital. In addition to tutoring, I am also a maroon mentor to first-year students in the College seeking a peer to provide guidance and support. When I am not engaging in these activities, I can be found in one of the dance spaces on campus. I am both a dancer and choreographer for UChicago Maya, a contemporary dance organization at the University.
If you could speak directly to the person whose gift supported your scholarship, what would you say?
I extend you my deepest thanks for allowing me to engage in opportunities I could not have envisioned previously. Because of you, students like me are able to chase their dreams and fulfill their highest potential. Words cannot sufficiently express my gratitude for your generosity. Thank you.
