How did your summer experiences clarify your career or academic
interests?
Since I was quite young, it has been a dream of mine to try working in film! This summer I finally experienced a part of this industry as an intern at Refilmery in NYC through the Metcalf Internship program. I got to live in a big city that I have always wanted to spend time in and work in film production, an industry that has always intrigued me. Working in New York City gave me a greater sense of confidence and a chance to refine professional skills such as networking and communicating. This experience gives me a reference point to consider as I look forward at courses to take and careers to pursue in the future. When trying to imagine a life direction to take, it is so helpful to have actual reference points! Plus, I just had a lot of fun with my internship.
What professor or course has had the greatest impact on you, and why? How are you identifying your academic passions?
The introductory Russian sequences and the professors who teach it have been one of the best parts of my academic experience so far. The department is welcoming and inclusive and the subject is so rewarding! It has been incredible to see how far my classmates and I have come in a short time. Russian is my favorite course to spend time on outside of class. In fact, having such a great time in the first few quarters made me decide to pursue Slavic studies as a major or minor while I am at UChicago.
What is your favorite spot on campus and why?
My favorite spot to spend time on campus this quarter is the Main Quad. It's a great place to see people and say "Hi" to friends. When the weather is warm, it is beautiful to sit out under the trees and study. When it starts to turn colder, the trees and ivy turn red and yellow and make the Quad so colorful! I love to meet up with friends and throw a frisbee for a half hour between classes. The Quad has the advantage of being central and convenient, and is just the iconic UChicago spot!
If you could speak directly to the person whose gift supported your scholarship, what would you say?
Thank you! I love being a student at this university and being surrounded by these people. There is such a diversity of ideas and activities happening every day at UChicago, from movies at Doc Films to speakers at the Institute of Politics to student performances of music, comedy, and theater. I think all the time about how lucky I am to be a student here, and it wouldn't be possible without you. So thank you so much!
