“This scholarship represents an opportunity to advance myself and to get the most out of my professional life.”

How did you learn about UChicago? When did you first know that UChicago was the right college for you?
In all honesty, I learned of the University of Chicago through the internet by googling "need-based aid universities." I initially dismissed such a prestigious university because I never felt like I had a chance. However, in late December I took a chance and started the application process. Through the essays, I began to really analyze my experiences and how they have affected me. It was by the end of this process that I realized that there was something special about this school. And to my surprise, I was accepted.

What is the most important thing you’ve learned since arriving on campus?
Since my arrival, I have learned the importance of managing one’s time. There exists a huge amount of activities, events, and obligations, and I simply cannot do it all. It is important for me to maximize the amount of things I can do, while also prioritizing those things that I find more important. Not only that, but I have to also account for the fact that I need time to rest and may not be in the mood to do so many activities.

What has your UChicago experience been like outside of the classroom?
Outside the classroom, I have had an amazing time meeting new people. I have met many fellow Odyssey scholars, those who frequent the Center for College Student Success, and those who were in the Chicago Academic Achievement Program. I have learned about many different cultures as well as my own through student organizations such as the Organization of Latin American Students (OLAS) and MEChA. Overall, I would say I have a great life outside of class. Honestly, I could not have imagined it this way, but I cannot think of how it could be better.

If you could speak directly to the person whose gift supported your scholarship, what would you say?
Thank you for the incredible experience that has been provided to me; one that would have been impossible and unthinkable for me otherwise. This scholarship represents an opportunity to advance myself and to get the most out of my professional life. This scholarship means I’m able to succeed despite socioeconomic disadvantages. In addition, I have formed incredible relationships with interesting people which would have been impossible without these donations. Thank you.
