Mengyuan C. recipient of the Crown CPS Scholarship

Mengyuan C. ’17

Hometown: Chicago, IL

What did you do this past summer?
I was a counselor for the University of Chicago's Young Scholars Program, a math enrichment program for 7-12th graders.

Please comment on the pursuit of your major and minor, as well as any other academic interests.
This year I changed my major from math to computer science. This change was motivated by the realization that I have a true passion and thirst for knowledge in regards to computer science, programming, and technology, and that my major should reflect that. I look forward to taking more computer science courses in the future.

Please tell us about a significant or memorable experience you have had during your time at UChicago.
This winter break I participated in a UCISTEM Trek to San Francisco. This Trek was a fantastic experience where I gained exposure to a lot of incredibly cool companies and organizations and met brilliant fellow students and employees. The Trek was also a motivating factor for my change of major, as I realized that I truly did want to learn more about technology.

What activities do you participate in outside of the classroom? Are there any that are new from last year?
I participate in the University Symphony Orchestra, chamber music, private lessons, and InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. The one that is new this year is the Chamber Music Organization, a group that I cofounded with friends dedicated to promoting a student run, participant focused chamber music community on the UChicago campus. I am also still on House Council for my house, Crown House.

As a scholarship recipient, to what extent are you grateful for the support you received?  What are your thoughts on how you might one day give back to the University of Chicago?
I am incredibly grateful for the support I have received as a scholarship recipient. I would likely not be able to attend this University if it were not for my scholarship. Because of the scholarship support, however, I have access to the University's top tier education and resources to pursue a life that may not otherwise have been possible. Thank you to all the donors who have contributed to my education at UChicago.  In the future, I hope to donate my time to UChicago and possibly contribute monetarily as well.
